SHIFTING POSITIONS
To shift from one position to another firstly you should pitch/hear in your head the note you are wanting to shift to – don’t move your finger to the note you want to shift to – move your hand to the position your hand should be in in order to be able to play the note perfectly. This works in either direction, up or down. You should practice shifts over and over to make sure you shift perfectly every occasion. This is called “muscle memory” and gives the student confidence in their shifting.
Do you know there are over 8 positions to learn through scales and exercises. Between many positions the are 1/2 positions to also learn whilst maintaining the shape and flexibility of your fingers and hand.
The finer details can only be taught through face to face lessons as most techniques have small subtle adjustments that need to be made depending on size of hand and other factors.
